Children & Sport

The health of a child’s teeth is extremely important, as dental therapy is very costly and traumatic for young people. Children who still have their first set of teeth or who wear braces have specific needs, as their mouthguards must take tooth movement and additional orthodontic devices into account in order for a good level of fit and protection. The use of a custom-fitted mouthguard, which is provided in consultation with a dental expert, will dramatically reduce the risk of serious dental injury. This will allow your child to enjoy their sporting activities - and allow you to enjoy peace of mind.

The Dangers of 'Boil & Bite' or 'Stock' Mouthguards

Cheap over-the-counter mouthguards are available from some sports store and pharmacies. These fall into two categories - the stock mouthguard and the ‘boil & bite’ variety. Stock mouthguards are often ineffective as they do not accurately match the player’s dentition. They are bulky and often cause discomfort or make it difficult for the player to breathe properly.

Boil and bite mouthguards can be especially unsuitable for children who have erupting teeth, as there is little allowance for tooth growth during the sports season.
